No more needs to be said. I'm not thrilled with the "Femme Fatale" cover stuck in the middle of the side (the backing vocals don't really help things, and besides I still feel like only Nico should sing it), but then again, can the 70s get more indie rock than Big Star covering a Velvet Underground song? Some songs i find to be lesser like "Stroke It Noel" or "O, Dana" but the whole album is a very interesting listen and sure experimental for it's time. Granted, great albums have been made in worse circumstances than these, and many people like to say something to the effect of "The tension of the sessions gives a tension to the material, " but what I end up hearing is material that's much less memorable and much more awkward than I'd want or expect.

It's been said by several posters that there is an underlying beauty in this albums fragility. After the debut didn't sell, the band actually broke up out of frustration, and even when they reunited Chris Bell didn't come back. What I don't get is that I can think of at least two other bands (Badfinger and the Flamin' Groovies) that share the "normal guitar band" sound and were around at exactly the same time, and yet Big Star's the only one that gets the "cult legend" tag by rock critics. And why do we continue to discuss it? Though it garnered heavy critical acclaim, poor distribution ended its popularity prematurely. It fits into the whole, so that's at least something. I don't think this album is perfect, but it IS great and a 10 is. Since #1 record is easier, less edgy listening, i like it better initially, but i bet i'll be playing this one a lot in the coming months. "Come On, Come On": Hyde Gets a Girl (404). There are no bad songs here, and the only cuts that are a little below the standards the rest of the album sets are "She's a Mover" (definitely enjoyable, but a little indistinct and fillerish, albeit filler most bands would shit themselves for) and "Morpha Too" (Chilton strains for the high notes here, and the piece as a whole feels a bit thrown together and off the cuff - in an unmemorable way). Misfortune of stumbling onto one of those abominations, "Love Revolution". With mellotrons and violins and stuff.

The highlights and general decency of the rest of #1 Record make it a minor classic, and the fact that the debut and Radio City are most easily found on the same CD probably makes that an essential addition to a serious collection of rock music. Long-time fans are certainly aware that the first season's version of what came to be known as "That '70s Song" was much more spare, performed in a different key, and featured a much different vocal from the version that would become a fixture for each of the series' next seven seasons. That said, both albums still very much stand the test of time today, because excellent guitar pop is still excellent guitar pop. Not great perhaps, but it's neat that after 50 or 60 reportedly weak solo albums, Alex was still able to reach back into the cobwebbed haunts of his cluttered mind and retrieve that once-so-strong Beatles influence. Everybody loves a "Shit Car"!
That gets this the ten all by itself. Regardless, I'd recommend that any fan of the band (and even people who don't love the band) hunt down "Lady Sweet, " and if getting this album for $1 is the best legal way to do so, I wouldn't discourage it. Honestly, the circumstances of the album made it unlikely for it to surpass the first one. Karang - Out of tune? To this day, it's one of the greatest guitar tones I have ever heard, and I would argue it's one of the greatest guitar sounds ever laid to tape.
