Lily's found her love of music while recovering from a suicide attempt. I appreciated the sensitivity around this subject matter (and I will not share what it is so I don't spoil it) and learned a lot about the topic through their writing. I'm not sure if it is because this book was co-written or because it is an eARC but I truly, entirely, whole heartedly believe that this book needs some MAJOR editing before being thrust into the bookish world. So, thank you for sharing that. After her death, most of these character traits don't even figure into the story. Summary: Mad Honey tells the story of a relationship through dual timelines and multiple perspectives. Recommendation: This is a riveting, and sometime tough to read book. I loved the courtroom drama and all the shocks that were revealed during the testimonies. Many of the comparisons work; some feel a little stretched. She said, "Try it this way. For me, just reading about her struggles and hopes and dreams was much more moving than the sometimes info-dumpy explanations of gender identity, like when the surgeon testified. Unfortunately, Lily is found dead, and Asher is accused of killing her. I feel changed after reading it and think about it constantly. Looking for the words to describe the impossible?
I really enjoyed Wish You Were Here and it's absolutely so relevant. Katharine S, Reviewer. When Lily is found dead, Asher is arrested for her murder. This book seemed more like a lot of her older books. Selena wonders if maybe that's why Lily was bruised: because she was taking estrogen as part of her hormone therapy. This one felt like it was all over the map trying to make too many statements. This book is important, entertaining and a masterpiece. Symptoms last for twenty-four hours and can (rarely) be fatal. JP: I am so excited. Jordan is worried that the revelation offers even more motive for Asher to have killed Lily. There are things that I've wanted to write about for a long time, about identity and about how we become who we are, and Jenny and I have very different lived experiences, as women, in this country. Privately, Olivia wonders whether Asher has inherited some of his father's rage.
Olivia is adamant that her son is innocent. JP: Well, I'll never tell. It's such a wild ride! All of them, even the secondary ones, feel real and whole. How did this reveal change everything for not just the trial but all the characters?
And finally, what I realized was that instead of making Lily a popular teen, I could make her kind of like the outcast that I was when I was in high school. This may be my favorite book of the year. Afterwards, Lily admits that her own father abused her. They learn that Lily could not be saved.
Wish You Were Here by Jodi Picoult. The subject matter, with it's themes of domestic abuse, had me putting the book down for a while until I was ready to jump back in. If I were going to recommend another book of mine that addresses where we live right now, in this country, as women, I would probably recommend A Spark of Light. Publisher: Ballantine. Caitlin, determined never to be ordinary, is always testing the limits, and in adolescence falls hard for Von, an older construction worker, while Vix falls for his friend Bru. JP: The reason that we love Lily, and I defy anyone not to love Lily, is we get to know who she was in retrospect. I don't want to say too much because the book is full of twists and turns, but I really enjoyed this and would recommend it to all. But wait, I'm going to tell you the best part. All in all, I can't begin to express how much I loved this book. There have been some terrific books about what womanhood means in America right now. What follows is a long and public courtroom trial in which everyone's secrets are exposed and even his own mother begins to question his innocence. Lily is smart and curious, and Asher is clearly in love. What a fresh take on unfolding a character's story. Jonah, her ex, didn't defend her.
