Edinburgh, Scotland-based band The Wynntown Marshals have, over fifteen years and four albums, created their own unique brand of roots music. My initial introduction to her was by way of her solo acoustic performance at Americanafest a number of years back, when she appeared in the back yard of The Groove Record store on Calvin Avenue. A little bit outlaw country, a little bit gritty Americana, it's a track that would sit well on any classic Mellencamp, Petty or Springsteen album. It displays John in his strongest position, playing guitar and piano and singing with such maturity. The concept is very much the singular vision of Blount. Certainly, an album that leaves a lasting impression.
The hasty rush into the studio meant Fullbright arrived with a mixed bag of some old, some new, and some unfinished songs, making his newfound cumulative approach to musical creation both crucial to the process and evident in the endearing final product. Much of the material took shape on his daily hikes in the mountains of Stokes County, North Carolina, where Caudle and his wife took refuge during the lockdown. In the case of this husband and wife, there is a clear bond that is manifest in the music that they play together. 'Where We Belong' is an old-style country blues workout, with a sublime acoustic guitar solo followed by an equally impressive fiddle break, that carries the spirit of Waylon and Merle loud and proud while 'Social Skills' takes things down a distinctly more rocky route. This guy is the real deal. Never Cry Again is a catchy love song with a full band driving it to the very end.
