The tensioner can not only move up and down, but also slightly forward and back thus not matter what the chain does, the tensioner keeps constant pressure on it. I had flywheel off to replace crank seals beforehand and key looked fine. These engines are extremely simple and inexpensive. So make sure and invest in better high quality bearings for everything that moves. Most mowers come with a gear driven steering setup. The bad thing about the old Briggs starters is there is no way to keep the bushings lubricated. First, I got some 1/1/4" steel pipe and cut some lengths about 2" long. Less than two hours was all it took. So far this rod has held up well under the stress. If you do something like this, you will have a greater chance of getting injured.
With the Acme axle, the proper caster and degree of inclination are already built-in, which will save you lots of time. The first time it stripped, I replaced the entire starter. One last word- it helps to have padding.
