I haven't measured, but I'd guess there's enough clearance in the pump to accept 7mm w/o drilling as well. Probably would have supplied the right part the first time. As I was torquing them, 25 ft-lbs seemed like a huge number for a 5/16 bolt. The problem is either I'm not a good student, or she isn't a good teacher, or both. Come to think about it, the only time, that I actually torqued them, was doing a build on the bench. Back in 2004, Jazzman posted a pic which had the torque specs for all the water pump bolts.

I cant find torque specs for this water pump - does 20 sound right? Loctite can be your friend, use good grade new fasteners, new good split washers, the loctite make the fastener stay where you put it, just remember, don't go back and and tighten it again, because if you move a fastener with loctite on it after it has set up, you nullify it's purpose. Torque is pretty much based on the size and grade of the bolt. Definately a goof, the 20 refers to just the large bolts that hold the AC bracket, yet that should probably read as 18-20 ft lbs. Just get them tight and then add a little umpff.

After doing a better job of reading the Bentley book, I found where it says 17 ft-# for the GA/GB engines. The bolts are different sizes but the larger ones are almost 5/16" and 7 ft/lbs sounds to light. Lynn, Sorry to read of your water pump fiasco. That's not going to happen for a while. According to service manual, I should tighten bolts in two stages: first 12N. The fine threads more closely match original. My Chilton manual doesn't state. I start comparing and the nose/snout of the new one is almost exactly 1" shorter than the one that was on.

Should I have tightened those bolts ANOTHER 12N. "The water was not fit to drink. Radiator was bigger, placed further forward and had electric pusher fans for cooling. Same size smaller volute but longer 'nose' as you found. I think the 25 is excessive, but I have not put 1 in a vice to see if it will yield it.

You have it now carry on. 0l, is the front cover gasket where coolant passages go thru it, its the timing chains cover. BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated: small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan. Since pump is in place with gasket and sealer could i just use 7mm tap without taking everything appart? I get this from engineers all the time, they are worse at, sitting at desk doesn't count for this, on experience of turning a wrench (OK I know I will get a PM from Mr. Tanner on that comment) Be open minded and heed advice from people who have walked down the path hundreds of times, that you now are embarking for first time.
