If we want change, we all have to work together. However, reading this book makes me realize how the fiction we read can easily be real. Tyler Johnson Was Here brings attention to issues, millions of black people suffer from now. Especially after this is the same person that beat up Marvin, took his chain, and also beat his brother up too. "I need your help, " Johntae says slowly. There were many parts in the book where the book didn't fully come together, some parts seemed a little unnecessary or too long. Because you pretty much know that Tyler dies at some point thanks to the description, you're waiting for that moment while reading the book. I know that both authors have been greatly impacted by these events throughout their lives but I think with this story focusing around Marvin's brother, it adds a different perspective - both of which are equally important. The story follows Marvin and his twin Tyler. I JUST REALLY WANTED TO LOVE THIS OKAY. The friendships were another thing I adored.

For once, a book is just as amazing as the cover. The thing is, those reads are never easy (and they're not supposed to be), but that's not the reason I hadn't gotten to Tyler Johnson Was Here earlier. Yes, there is romance that blossoms, but the initial companionship is a shared relationship based on grief. "Tyler Johnson Was Here refuses to pull its punches. There are many policemen and women, one cannot forget, who are truly good and helpful people, who respect their duty to the community, no matter the color of anyone's skin, or their background.
Because of that, I found myself not completely connected to the story because it didn't feel like I was getting all of the information. My issue is that some subplots and little issues or conflicts here and there were not resolved and that irked me. With a well-written sense of grief and of empowerment shadowing the book, Coles' writing feels authentic and from-the-heart. I don't really know why I gave this novel 5 stars, to be honest. "Exploring the current climate of police brutality and viral culture, this harrowing YA effort is based on its author's own experiences with tragedy and loss, a personal touch felt across every page. Now allow me to leave you with my favourite quote: "People will try to convince you that you don't deserve to live. G-mo and Ivy felt like one-note characters, normally talking about girls or their favorite TV show when with Marvin. And that is what this book will tell you. The fact that the book is told in his point of view, really allows for an up-close and personal look. Every once in awhile the hype (generally in addition to an audiobook from the library) convinces me to read a book, and that's what happened with Tyler Johnson Was Here by Jay Coles, but I'm glad it did.

Y'all ever have those books that you just KNOW are going to be so amazing and beautiful and then you start it and it's like you get hit by a big o'le "NOPE" train?! They all stand out on their own I think, with their own usefulness, nicknames and what they mean in Marvin's, and by extension, Tyler's life. This was tough to read, but it was very eye opening and I am glad that I was able to read about this type of experience. I could honestly appreciate the retro reference to "A Different World", though I wonder if Coles could've also referenced other modern series that teens of color, particularly African-American teens, watch such as "The Get Down", "Dear White People", or "Black-ish/Grown-ish". ) As the book continues, we learn more about his anger, his extreme pain as he feels like his life has been taken away from him because his brother was taken away from him. Before reading it, I happened upon a New York Times op-ed posted this morning, arguing that this time, it will be different and America will change, George Floyd being the straw that broke the camel's back.
He found his meaning of freedom and what mattered most to him through other means and in honoring his brother in his own way. The best parts of the book, for me, are the little things in life for which Marvin shows such appreciation. Second, how have you lived in the U. and not had guacamole? Still, the narrative pulled me in and I was rooting for Marvin the whole novel. By Jay Coles ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 20, 2018. Still, I'd like to say something: Video evidence should not be necessary to get people heard or to get a conviction or even as much as an arrest. The story is told from the POV of Tyler's twin brother, Marvin.
Tyler Johnson Was Here Book Review Essay
There is also a scene in which one of Marvin's friends says he hates white people and when his other friend says that he is being racist, too, Marvin reasons that he is only prejudiced, not racist, which I found to be a problematic and unformed dismissal. Again, the writing wasn't great, but it told the story and it did its job. We get books about anger or the fight for justice but not about the quiet soul crushing grief a loved one feels when this happens to them. And I think it's my time to finally be who I am, who I want to be". It was more about Marvin finding someone he could rely on for comfort, that wasn't in his immediate circle. It showcases not just scales of racist attitudes in day-to-day interactions with people in his neighborhood, but also culminating in the event that has Malcolm and his friends remembering his brother in a hashtag: #TylerJohnsonWasHere. "Coles's contemporary novel addresses real issues facing black teens in the U. S. today, and is a powerful story full of heart, packing a deep emotional punch. A timely and difficult topic: unarmed boys of color shot by law officers. And the characters, oh the characters.
It's realistic, it's raw and unfiltered. I have no issue with a contemporary novel mentioning pop culture references and name brands. I cried, a lot, when he was found dead. Marvin is a precious little cinnamon roll of a protagonist. No justice, no peace. Emphasises the importance of relationships and community, and how they can be an anchor in trying times -- familial, friendship and unexpected friends, strangers standing in solidarity. Jay Coles is a voice we need in YA today, and you bet your ass I am going to read this book. As a white person who has not been in this type of situation, it was painful to see the fear and injustice that POC feel when in certain situations– even when they have done nothing wrong. Some days, when I do, I just stare at the blackness I see in the mirror hanging on my closet door. That being said, I think it was really important to include because it really puts things into perspective. My heart ached the whole time I read this. I barely have a buck to my name, but I don't care. Tonnya J, Librarian. I see that at least some of my friends on Goodreads really enjoyed this book, so maybe you will, too.
Tyler Johnson Was Here By Jay Coles
The ending was okay, Coles tries to end things on a good note, but by then I was just ready to close this book and move onto something else. I'm not going to rate it though just because I don't want a poor rating on it when it's just the writing and characters that suck, the story has meaning and don't want to take down the overall writing just because I'm bitter and salty. His love for his brother was mesmerizing. Anyone who says that the black-kid-shot-by-a-white-cop thing is a cliche clearly hasn't been watching the news any time in the past bajillion years and can get bent.
Tyler and Marvin are close, but after an encounter with an officer in the beginning, Tyler becomes distant and we learn that he gets involved with a group of kids who he really shouldn't. This is the story of Tyler being murdered by a police officer simply because he's black. Furthermore, there's also a sapphic secondary character who is honestly my queen. If you can get me out of here, I can help you get Tyler back.
The difference between Marvin and the man who murdered his brother is that Marvin's story, though there was so much valid rage and sadness in it, still had love. Christine N, Reviewer. Crying can make you see past it, past the pain that hurts your growing heart. I know what it's like to have to spread ashes of a family member, it's kind of weird experience, so I can relate to Marvin in that way. What I'm Reading Next: Scott Pilgrim– Bryan Lee O'Malley (but I'm not going to review these). Coles also makes use of a vast number of metaphors and similes, which felt too much at times, but overuse of these is also a bit of a pet peeve for me, so this could simply be a personal issue. Marvin's mom lacked characterization for me, so did Ivy and G-mo (and they were Marvin's best friends so I expected a bit more), plus the chemistry in a certain relationship in the book felt nonexistent and/or not convincing enough for me.
"Jay Coles' powerful, anguished debut rners worthy comparisons to 2017's award-winning The Hate U Give. This is the story of Marvin, a teenage boy whose brother Tyler is involved with some bad people and goes missing after a party. Find more reviews and bookish fun at "I've spent too much time wondering what people think of me and spent so long trying to look good enough for Dodson, for white people, for Mama, for everyone except myself. I couldn't help but compare the cop scenes in here with the cop scene in THUG, where the cop did what he did because his racism surfaced during a snap decision he made because he was afraid. Review Posted Online: Oct. 28, 2019. A few days later, Tyler's body is found and a video of a police officer shooting and killing him is leaked online. I picked this book up because I felt like I've been reading a lot of fantasy novels lately. "— Shelf Awareness. " The writing was not good.
I loved that his best friends were a Latino boy and a mixed race lesbian, adding an extra layer of diversity to an already diverse story. They were on the verge of growing apart a little bit, but still had that unbreakable bond. Their family is headed by a single mother separated from her husband due to incarceration. Everyone believes that Salil Singh killed his girlfriend, Andrea Bell, five years ago—except Pippa Fitz-Amobi. I read it in two hours, I couldn't put it down, I could stop my tears from falling, but I had to keep on reading. I cried when we had to see a cop brutally attack a black teen just for being black. The writing is stunning - I highlighted a bunch of different passages that I loved, and I thoroughly appreciated that the story included letters from Marvin's imprisoned father. It shows the grief and the unity of the black community and their will to fight for what is right and at the same time move on and make something great of themselves.
