A mission statement is different to a vision. There is no end point: strategy is not simply a grander name for a plan, something that moves you forwards in predetermined steps. Research, design, manufacturing, product placement, and marketing will all take place within their designated time frames and on budget. The adage, "failing to plan is planning to fail" – often attributed to Ben Franklin – certainly applies here. Every time a board asks managers if they are sure about their strategy or regulators make them certify the thoroughness of their strategy decision-making processes, it weakens actual strategy making. The more you read, the better you write. Strategic planning is not about creating a list of objectives and activities that stays stagnant and is ignored by the leadership. It can also lead to indecision, or vacillating between different decisions ("thrashing"). Yes, all that is happening is that the words strategy, strategic, strategically are being used to make things sound important. Boards will insist on being presented with a strategic plan — or even better having a board/management strategy offsite!

As much as boards and regulators may want the world to be knowable and controllable, that's simply not how it works. A strategy outlines how you will overcome challenges, confront vulnerabilities, and leverage all your assets and favorable forces to prevail through the journey to arrive at your ultimate destination.
